Okey Nwanya

 

Okey is a Partner and the Head of the Dispute Resolution Department of Gbenga Biobaku & Co. His practice covers a broad range of contentious matters on behalf of corporate clients, financial institutions and oil and gas exploration and production companies as well as oil services companies. Okey has over 14 years practical and hands-on litigation experience. Okey has acted for clients in a broad range of cases and conducted litigation proceedings at various Courts in Nigeria including High Court freezing orders, injunctions, appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. Okey has also conducted and advised corporate and commercial clients in various arbitration proceedings including arbitrations under ICC and LCIA rules.

He has represented both corporate and private clients in variety of disputes including partnership and shareholder disputes, labour disputes, tax and regulatory disputes, winding-up actions and disputes relating to land, commercial property, energy, employment, banking & finance.

Okey’s personal qualities include a good understanding of commercial law as well as a good working knowledge of civil procedure and law of evidence.

Acted as lead Counsel representing an international professional services firm in a N1.4 billion action involving report by it on the issue of the incorrectly reported profit by a publicly quoted company in Nigeria.

Represented PricewaterhouseCoopers in an arbitration matter involving a long lease of its office facility.

Conducted legal due diligence and provided pre-investment advice in a $15 million USD private equity investment by African Capital Alliance in Bankers Warehouse Limited foremost international private equity firm in a leading cash-in-transit company in Nigeria.

Represented Baker Hughes in several litigation matters in the Niger-Delta region and other parts of Nigeria.

Represented ExxonMobil in litigation matters in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria.

Represented a multi-national oil service company in various labour disputes including actions at the High Courts in the Niger-Delta region.

Advised and assisted a multi-national company in respect of a tax dispute with the Lagos State Board of Internal Revenue.
